空间感知工作坊「No Where, Now Here」

Workshop “No Where, Now Here”

This workshop aims to awaken the tiny perception that exists between daily life experience and the actually reality. The tiny perceptions either too minuscule to be noticed or too habitual to rise to the level of consciousness. Through shifts in scale and units of measurement, the workshop seeks to reestablish a balance between bodily perception, self-awareness, and architectural space, encouraging participants to reconsider unnamed or unarticulated ways of relating to their surrounding environment. At the same time, it invites participants to reflect on the gap between what their surroundings offer for observation and what they actually perceive.

What will we do in the workshop?

In this workshop, participants are invited to select an object within their immediate reach. It can be anything, a pen, a set of keys, a book, or a water bottle. Through sketching, they will transform the chosen object into an architectural space. During this process, participants are encouraged to wonder how the conception of this space emerges from the object itself, and how it might be realized, constructed, and gradually developed into a space that can be visualized and been entered.

This is followed by group discussions in which participants share and examine the conceptual foundations and specific details of each sketch. Guiding questions may include: What is the texture of the space’s surfaces? What are its scale and dimensions? Where is the entrance located and how to enter it ? What function does the space serve? And how might one move from their current position into this space?

As more and more details are examined and discussed, this imagined architecture gradually becomes concrete and real. The process of architecturalization itself blurs the boundary between abstraction and reality, allowing these images to move beyond imagination and be regarded as potential, viable spatial possibilities. Perhaps, when we explore how an as-yet non-existent architectural space might be constructed, this process itself becomes an experiment in the emergence of potential social structures.

Workshop Leader : Qi jiajia

Jiajia Qi is a Netherlands-based Chinese artist. She studied Interactive Media Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (NL, 2019), Interior Architecture Design at Tokyo Zokei University, Tokyo (JP, 2017), and Sociology at Zhejiang A&F University, Hangzhou (CN, 2011).

Qi’s practice focuses on experiential, site-specific installations that incorporate interaction, architecture, and sculptural elements through the exploration and connection between time, space, and site. Her ongoing research wonder what happens when viewers enter a space and become aware of “what is absence?” rather than “what is it?”, from an ambition to understand and re-establish a connection between philosophy, architecture, geography, and sociology, to shift people’s attention from their familiar milieu to the boundary of the unknown.

She has participated in numerous artist residencies, including Cité internationale des arts in Paris (FR), the European Ceramic Center in Oisterwijk (NL), Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (DE), Lottozero Textile Laboratory in Prato (IT), SAC Artist Residency in Chiang Mai (TH), Billytown in The Hague (NL), Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing (CN), Seoul Museum of Art (KR), KulturKontakt Austria in Vienna (AT), and the Advanced Art Museum in Changsha (CN).
